Just popping in quickly to show off the finished cross block baby quilt for the new niece or nephew due in a few months! The parents don’t learn the gender until birth so I’m hoping it’s gender-neutral enough.
Fabrics are Ikea’s nummer print (which I’ve heard is going out of print soon so I’m stocking up!) And Jay McCarroll’s Habitat Canvas in both colorways. The backing is Joel Dewberry Notting Hill plaid in poppy, I believe. I stashed this plaid a while ago specifically to use as a backing, I’m so happy I’ve found the perfect quilt for it!
It’s quilted with simple horizontal and vertical lines. Primarily because I have a small domestic machine and I’m lazy, but also because I wanted it to be nice and soft and fluffy for the kidlet.
This is my second attempt at machine binding. The first time was my husband’s creeper quilt for his birthday and I was rushing. This time I glue basted the heck out of the binding and it turned out MUCH better. Still not perfect but definitely acceptable!
Also interesting: I tried fusible batting because it’s still wintery here in Ohio and I didn’t want to open a window for spray basting, and I just hate hate hate using pins. I found that if I re-ironed every time I shifted to a new section and used pins to hold down the corners it worked really really well! I just wish it was cotton instead of polyester. Maybe I can order cotton online? I’m hoping all that glue washes out in the wash!
These photos are pre-first-washing. I’m ready to see it all crinkly, so in it goes!
