A couple of weeks ago I posted my video tutorial on converting traditionally pieced patterns to paper pieced patterns. I also mentioned on that post that it would work well with Thimble Blossom’s Fireworks quilt, and of course with the Marcelle Medallion quilt pattern. Well, this weekend I actually converted the Fireworks block, and in fact I didn’t even have to do any measuring. Just had to do some simple eyeballing and know the finished block size. I knew the block was 24″ finished from the pattern, and that the center was a perfect square. From there it was really simple to convert the design.
You can see that the paper piecing conversion sort of “confuses” the chevron shapes, but that’s mostly because I did the block “scrappy” instead of just using two or three fabrics. It just depends on the look you’re going for.
I will also say that I don’t think this was any faster. In fact it might have been slower, and more wasteful for sure. But I would NEVER. EEEEEEVER have been able to get all those points as crisp and perfect if I’d traditionally pieced it. I might still attempt that, just as a personal comparison, we’ll see!
I do have a plan for this block, involving my awesome paper pieced arrow pattern as sashing, so we’ll see if I ever get around to that. :p
Fabrics used: Constellations and Kona Ash.
Your scrappy version is wonderful!
Thanks Patti!! I’ve got a whole series of these large block conversions on the way, the next one should be popping up this weekend. 😀
